Notes for Adam Harvey McKee:

From Wayne Adams

Until bible (from older brother Wm.D’s line) turned up with “Family of Harvey McKee of MO” knew of just two children – Sarah & Emily;  Elizabeth & Archibald apparently died in infancy.  Also a “Jane McKee” who died 15 Mar 1872 identified in this family. She was in HouseHold on 1870C. Assume above entries copied from Harvey’s own bible.  Estate file #1447; executor James McMullen; no mention of McKee’s in folder except for a Doc McKee purchase.  Left 40A Southeast Southwest 1/4 S3T40R3E, 2 horses, 1 cow, 3 hogs, all corn “now gathered” & household furniture to McMullen.  Residence was on Dry Creek and he is buried at Pilgrims Rest Church Cem.

HARVEY ADAM McKEE was the youngest known child by MICHAEL Sr’s first marriage.  He would have been the son aged 15-20 in MICHAEL Sr’s household on the 1830 Census.  Jefferson County marriage records (pg.2 of 1838-49 volume) show the marriage of HARVEY McKEE to MARTHA McKEE (his brother’s widow) on 20 May 1838. On the 1840 census, we find “HARVAY” listed on the same page with MICHAEL Sr & MICHAEL Jr (pg.196), although separated by several households.  The enumeration listed his age as 20-30 and his wife’s as 30-40.  His brother’s four children are accounted for in the household plus there is an “extra” girl under age 5 (boy 10-15, 2 girls 5-10 and 2 girls under 5). From the 1850 census, we can identify this fourth girl as SARH who would have been born during 1838-9 to H.A. and MARTHA.

On the 1850 census HARVEY A. McKEE headed Household #50 not far from BENJAMIN (Household #40), MICHAEL Jr (Household #41) and MICHAEL III (Household #41).

Name   Age         From

Harvey A. McKEE              39           SC

Heasther                                40           MO

Margaret                               16           MO

Sara                                        11           MO

Emily                                     5             MO

Unless MARTHA died and H.A. remarried, it appears that her middle name must have been “Heaster” and that EMILY was the second child born of their marriage.

His estate file included a receipt for his tombstone (now sunken/illegible?) and helps us to fill in a few other details concerning him.

Estate #1447 – Harvey McKEE      (James McMULLIN, Executor)

HARVEY McKEE [full name was ADAM HARVEY McKEE per tombstone referred to in file; son of Michael McKEE, Sr] – Bill for tombstone (cost $35) shows he was born July 13th, 1811 and died March 30, 1880.  The executor was James McMULLEN and on 30 Mar 1880, HARVEY willed to James C. McMULLEN his land (40 acres SE SW qtr. Sec.3, Twp.40, Rng.3E), 2 horses, 1 cow, 3 hogs & all the household furniture…all the corn now gathered & all the wheat growing on said farm.  Except for purchases at the sale by DOC McKEE there is no mention of McKEEs in the folder.  The residence was on Dry Creek and burial was at Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery.

While the family bible was invaluable in the identification of the children of Michael Sr, some rebuttable assumptions were necessary.    Linda Goodell found a DAVID McKEE and a PETTUS GREEN McKEE on an 1840 census record.  Either or both could have been sons of MICHAEL Sr.  The legibility of the 1840 census for Jefferson County is poor but I haven’t been able to confirm these households.  I did find “Seth Green” McKEE’s household in Valle Township, but this was WILLIAM SETH’s son (MICHAEL Sr’s nephew).  Possibly the reference was to a neighboring county but in any event we cannot close the door upon the possibility that these or other Missouri McKees belong with this family.  The ARCHIBALD McKEE of Randolph Co, IL heading a household which may have included the nephew of Michael McKee Jr (discussed earlier) poses a particularly intriguing possibility.
