Descendants of M A McKee
Generation No. 1
1. M A29 MCKEE was born June 24, 1818, and died November 12, 1893 in Abbeville County, South Carolina. She married JAMES WILLIAM GILMER 1838. He was born December 03, 1803 in Abbeville County, South Carolina, and died September 30, 1870 in Abbeville County, South Carolina.
Notes for M A MCKEE:
Two consecutive M.A.’s; one male one female per Sherry.
Cornelius Hamilton McKee, son of William D. McKee, had a daughter, Anna Gertrude McKee. She married Cornelius O. Gilmer. His death certificate states that his parents were James Gilmer and Mary McKee. Who was this Mary McKee? Did she possibly come from the Adam Jackson McKee line? Cornelius Gilmer was born Aug 2, 1851 so Mary McKee was “probably” born later 1820’s or early 1830’s. Trying to figure out who might fit in here. I found where Adam Jackson McKee had a daughter Mary born in 1805. There was only one son, Adam Jr and I have no daughters Mary listed. William Seth McKee had a daughter named Mary, with the right dates, but she was born and lived in MO. Or could the person that gave the information gotten confused with Anna’s maiden name being McKee and gave it in the wrong place?
Further research of Cornelius Gilmer’s mother shows that it is very likely she is this M.A. She was born abt 1817-1818. She had a daughter named Nancy {name of her mother}; sons named James Alfred and Cornelius {her brother’s names}. She died before death certificates were issued. Three of her children that died after they were issued all gave her maiden name was McKee. Her oldest son had a W as his middle initial–most likely William after her father. She would have been married before the 1830 and 1840 census and would not show up with her father at that time. We have been unable to find William on the 1820 census–lending the belief he was in MO at the time. Given all the circumstancial evidence I have included her here with M.A. McKee born in 1818. Her descendants give her name as Mary Elizabeth and even one daughter put her name as Polly, which was a common nickname for these names of the time. This would disprove that the two M.A.’s were each a male and female. Since her grandmother’s name was Margaret, it does make one wonder if her first name was Margaret, but there’s no proof there.
She lost 4 children in infancy and 3 sons to the Civil War. She saw 7 of her 12 children die before her.
